Interior Design 2010

Using the correct lighting fixtures and bulbs throughout your home is a skill that can help you enjoy the time spent at home even more. That's because home lighting can be useful for two intended purposes, the first being function, and the second being mood. With that in mind, consider each room in your home and what it is mainly used for. What are the activities that often go on in that room? How much light will be usually needed for those activities? Are there any points of interest in the room that you would really like to draw attention to? Asking these questions can help you lay out your home lighting design so that it fits both form and function. Most lighting fixtures that you choose for your design will most likely fall into one of three categories, general lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. Let's discuss each of these in greater detail. General lighting is perhaps the kind of lighting that most people are familiar with. It's very simply the most prominent lighting source in the room, very often an overhead fixture. As its name implies, it provides a general, overall source of light for the entire room. These general types of lighting fixtures can be very simple or very ornate, but their first and foremost job is to provide sufficient lighting for the occupants of the room to be able to move around safely. The next type of home lighting that we want to consider is called task lighting, and this is an area where many home lighting designs are found to be insufficient. The purpose of task lighting is to help illuminate a specific area for a certain kind of task that will be performed there. For instance, if there is a reading area in a room, it would be very appropriate to have either a floor lamp or a table lamp positioned very close to the seating arrangement with the correct bulb wattage to ensure that a person will be able to read comfortably not only for a few minutes, but even for a prolonged period of time. Once again, this is where many home lighting designs fall short. Quite often, many folks expect a general lighting fixture for each room to be sufficient for the tasks that are performed there. But this is not always the case, especially with activities that call for focused reading over a period of time, or specialized tasks performed in the kitchen. So the proper use of task lighting can improve your enjoyment and effectiveness of tasks and activities performed at home. Finally, consider also accent lighting. This kind of lighting fixture is not meant to provide illumination for activities in a specific room, as much as it is meant to focus attention on a particular feature or area of the room that you wish to highlight or set a mood for. A good example of accent lighting is when lights are focused on a painting on a wall. These lights don't really contribute that much to the overall light level of the room, but they do bring attention to the painting instead, which is what they are designed to do. There is an almost endless array of lighting fixtures that can be used for all three kinds of lighting, whether it is general, task, or accent lighting. But try to think ahead and plan out each room in your home so that you can use each kind of lighting fixture to its maximum potential.

Clearing Clutter In The Master Closet
The woman or man on top of the mountain didn’t fall there". I chuckled when I first read this and then I read it again. But isn’t this the truth? To reach a goal or to change for the better it does take effort. Many of us have problems with clutter in our master closets. But there are ways to eliminate clutter to make our lives easier. Here are some excellent tips on getting rid of clutter in the closet.

Take everything out on the floor of your closet. Get everything up and off your closet floor. Chances are there are many pairs of shoes and stray boxes living there.
http://interiordesign-room.blogspot.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/02.jpg
Now put only the shoes back that you wear. Toss the old ones that don’t match anything you now wear. Get rid of the worn out shoes with rundown heals—or take them to the repair shop. But don’t put them back in your closet. They go into the BE basket (Belongs Elsewhere) if they are going to the repairman or in the trash if they can’t be worn by anyone.

Another tip for things found on the floor in the closet: As a professional organizer I often find gifts stuffed in closets. And many times the owner is surprised they even purchased the gift and are thrilled to have found it. I recommend putting all gifts you intend on giving away in one place in your home. The closet is fine if there is room. Put them in a container with a lid and place it where you can readily access it.

It may be in a container you roll under the bed, or in a container you place in the back part of the closet either on a shelf or on the floor. Or place it in a completely different room in a container on a shelf. When you need a gift it is so nice not to have to quickly run to the store or search the house for what you know you purchased but can’t find. And it certainly makes clearing clutter a whole lot easier when things are contained and you know where to find them.

Have you heard the expression "The More You Have The Less You See"? This is true all over the house and is certainly true in the master bedroom closet. When clothes are jammed in it is hard to see what you have.

We now have our floor all tidy and organized so we are moving on to the closet rod in our quest of getting rid of clutter. Take everything out that is on the rod. If you share the closet with someone else just do one side at a time—I suggest doing your side first. It can be a chore to do this, but believe me it is worth it. Then you can see how much space you have and nothing can hide from you.

As you put your clothes back look at each one and evaluate if you like it, wear it, fit in it, is it clean or does it need repairing? Only put back clothes that you wear. Put them back in categories. All blouses together, casual tops, dressy tops and also divided by long or short sleeve. Put all pants together, dresses together and suits.

Get rid of wire hangers and plastic ones too. My preference is to use wooden hangers as they look beautiful and give your clothes some room so they don’t become as wrinkled. You don’t have to purchase them all at once, do this a little at a time and before you know it you will have all beautiful hangers. IKEA is the most reasonable as far as price that I know of but I have seen them at Home Depot, Target and other variety stores as well that aren’t really expensive.

When you are getting rid of clutter in your closet take it a step at a time doing first the floor, then the clothes on the rod and then the shelf and soon you will be singing the praises of your closet and will be thrilled that you have gotten rid of a lot of clutter.

Home Interior Decorating

Home Interior Decorating

Small spaces generally have a cozier and warm feel than large spaces. It is very easy to enhance this coziness with warm colors and lots of draperies and decorative pillows.
It is also possible to give small room an airier and wider feel. The best idea to visually enlarge your room is to use light and bright colors. Cool colors as green and blue tend to recede from the eye and therefore give a larger feel to a room. This effect can be enhanced by painting the trims, borders and moldings in a lighter color than the walls. This will make the walls appear further away and thus the room appears bigger. When choosing the colors, keep contrast levels down. Use colors that are in the same color family rather than contrasting colors. This will make the place cozier and less chaotic.
Another idea for creating visual effects by using color is to paint a single wall in a rich color and keep the other walls light. Because the stronger colors attract all the attention, the other walls seem to fall away. Besides this, the ceiling should always be painted in stark white, no matter the color of the walls. The white ceiling will maximize brightness in the room.
Decorating home interior can be rather simple and easy. Furniture for small rooms should be very carefully selected. There are many pieces of furniture that can be used for different functions. Try to find double-duty furniture. Chests can be used for storage as well as a coffee table or television stand. In small guest rooms you could use sofa beds that are easily convertible; some even convert into bunk beds.
In small rooms the furniture should always be slim and simple. Another idea would be to use only a few pieces of larger scale furniture, to reduce the clutter of many smaller ones. In a small space everything easily turns into a focal point. Keep the items simple. Arrange the furniture at an angle to lead the eye diagonally across the room and visually enlarge it.
With the use of light, the appearance of a room can be altered and achieve the desired home interior decorating. Mirrors reflect natural as well as artificial light. When the light is reflected deep into the room, it will appear larger. Spotlights pointing toward the ceiling will make the room look higher. And track lights aimed at the walls visually expand the space. Track lighting is also good to free up some floor space.
The more you see of the floor, the larger the space looks. Throw out the coffee table and use smaller side tables instead. If you can’t live without your coffee table, use a table with a glass top to make the floor visible through it. A mirror on top of your table top will work too.
Another tip to get more living space in your room is to throw out what you don’t need. Remove interior doors. And get rid of all the things that you do not need. A good idea is to see if you have used the item in the last year or not. If you haven’t used it or even looked at it, you are probably never going to use it and you won’t miss it; old clothes and shoes, kitchen appliances, magazines, silly holiday souvenirs, and more.
Important when you are living in a small space is the dirt and clutter. Try to avoid any disorder in the room by using the less is more philosophy. Use a single piece of artwork or a large print rather than a small collection of things. Clean up any jumble in the room. Create smooth and clean surfaces. And clean the windows often to make the room brighter and larger.
