One of the first things I think about before purchasing new furniture such as bamboo beds or all natural mattresses is what am I going to do with the furniture I’m replacing. I like to think in terms of how can this furniture I no longer want benefit someone else. There are a couple of ways to do this and it doesn’t necessarily mean breaking it down into its parts.
1.) Donate It. You’d be surprised at how many young families in our day and age are struggling to make ends meet even more seasoned families. Often funds are tight but maybe they have a 30 year old sofa that is on it’s last legs (awful pun intended) and no cash to go out and get something else. If you know of a family by all means offer them your furniture. It gives it a good home and allows someone else to use it which in turn helps to give it new life.
2.) Sell It. If you don’t know anyone you can give your furniture to try selling it in the paper or through online auctions or online resources. Remember, you’re not trying to make a profit on it you’re simply trying to find it a good home and some of that money can be used towards your new furniture.
3.) Recycle It. To me recycling furniture can mean any number of things. My family likes to donate furniture to companies like Goodwill and Salvation Army. They use the proceeds to create jobs and to fund local programs which can really help local communities. Recycling may also mean having a eco-friendly company come that will use the wood and other parts of the furniture to create other things which can then in turn be used again. These services are harder to find in some cities but they are out there.
